… L’s Nighttime Routine
… Do NOT take it like that, you dirty-mindded creature! I merely mean the routine which I follow in the evenings before I go to sleep.
… No! That does NOT still sound wrong; get your mind out of the gutter, will you?
For the more cleanly-minded individuals reading this, shall we, together, continue with this perfectly innocent post? I think we ought to, and so without further ado, let me guide you through the steps that I like to take before bedtime.
Note that not all of these steps happen every night: it depends on how much I have to do, how much time I have and how much energy I have left.
a. Blog, blog, blog, blog, blogging…
Yes, indeed, I like to read and especially like to write in the evenings. After a long day slaving away at school or at life (it’s all the same in the end), there’s usually at least one thing that sticks in my mind which can provide inspiration for a post. Sometimes it’s something that someone has said, or something that I’ve thought after a certain event, and that enables me to brainstorm loosely related ideas. I also take this time to do my blogmin — my noun, not yours, don’t steal. Basically, this is where I organise, for example, the All Around Us posts (which have been receiving an incredible response from you all, so thank you very much), or any Twitter mentions, replies, follows etc.
I chabblenge you, dear reader, to find something — anything — that is more relaxing, calming and just generally lovely than a nice, warm shower in the evenings. For Christmas, I received a small Bluetooth speaker which is waterproof, and so I have this suctioned to the bathroom wall, reachable from the shower. In the evenings, I hook up my phone or iPad to said speaker, and listen to some music. I tried using it to listen to podcasts and audio books from Audible, but it requires concentration, and that’s too much to ask for in the shower. Sometimes, I curl up on the floor and just let the shower pour down on me, gentle but strong, if you know what I mean. Honestly, it’s so relaxing, and really allows me to unwind before bed.
I’m not sure why, to be honest, but I have to text someone a little while before I go to bed. You know, have a little conversation, a nice chat and a discussion about the day. Sometimes this evolves into a phone call, often it does not. For some reason, it helps texting one of your close friends before bed: it just allows you to relax, and in my case, reminds me that I’m not alone, and that people listen to me, whether I’m being morbid or humourous.
I’m British — do forgive me. Yes, before I climb into bed, I take one of my treasured Earl Grey teabags (which I hord in my room for safekeeping from the family), venture downstairs and proceed to make a nice, calming mug of tea. The scent alone is enough to make me want a cup, and it gives me an opportunity to say goodnight to my family and to my cats (who then proceed to stalk me upstairs). I always use this really big mug; it’s got a blue checkered pattern on it, and is big enough that the tea is neither to strong nor too weak, if you get what I mean.
every. Book & Music
Yes, I’m one of these people who can’t do anything in silence — not even reading. So, when I climb into bed (ensuring I don’t spill my tea down my onesie), I grab my noise-cancelling headphones from the end of my bed, plug them into my phone and switch on my Chill playlist. It’s just a playlist I’ve put together with some really calm songs on it; no heavy beats or electronic sounds. Not all the songs are necessarily 100% positive, but I don’t mind that: it’s quite njce, actually.
Then, I grab my book (currently To Kill a Mockingbird) and read a chapter. I’m one of these really annoying people who has to read either a whole chapter, or nothing at all, and so I can safely say that when I do read, I read a fair amount.
Then I sleep… What more is there to say? I turn off my music, sometimes put on a TV show to watch whilst I fall asleep, lay my head down on my pillow and sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
NO, NO, WAKE UP!!! It’s not over — the post, I mean! I didn’t mean to send you to sleep…
